About the Danube
Back by very popular demand, experience a wonderful scenic journey travelling along the Danube as you dip in and out of the fascinating history and culture of some of the most beautiful cities in the heart of Europe.
From the pretty city of Passau on the Austrian border to the Hungarian capital of Budapest, cruise in comfort and style aboard the MS Serenity.
DAY 1: After completing our local pick-up route we head towards Dover for the Channel crossing. On arrival in Calais, the journey continues to our overnight hotel (to be confirmed).
DAY 2: Today we continue our coach journey to Lower Bavaria in Germany and board our ship in Passau, known as ‘the three rivers city’ due to its unique location where the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers meet. You can then relax as we set sail and cruise towards Melk.
DAY 3: This morning we arrive in the fairy-tale like town of Melk, which lies in the beautiful Wachau Valley. Here you can join our excursion to discover the Benedictine Abbey, one of the world’s most famous monastic houses which has been occupied by monks for over 900 years. Today, Melk Abbey is a prestigious school with more than 800 students, yet black robed Benedictine monks still stroll among the marble structures and frescoed walls.
Our guided tour shows you the magnificent Marble Hall, Emperor’s Gallery, Abbey Church and the terrace where you can enjoy fine views of the Danube River and the town. You can relax on board for the remainder of the day as we cruise to Vienna for an overnight stop.
DAY 4: We spend a full day experiencing the delights of Vienna, the city of music. Grand palaces, baroque castles, magnificent squares and striking monuments are abound as we take an excursion to Schönbrunn Palace, which is part of the World Heritage Site. This is a wonderful opportunity to see inside the luxurious interiors and explore some of the 1,441 rooms, which are filled with magnificent chandeliers, beautiful ceiling frescoes and lashings of gold decoration. Highlights include the Great Gallery, the Chinese Cabinets and Emperor Franz Joseph’s private suite. In the early evening we cast off and cruise towards Budapest.
DAY 5: Today we have a full day in Budapest, one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Here you can explore both sides of Hungary’s capital – traditional Buda and the more cosmopolitan Pest. Start the day by joining our guided tour which introduces you to the highlights and helps you get your bearings in the city known as the ‘pearl of the Danube’.
Accompanied by a local guide, our coach city tour takes in some of the most beautiful areas including Heroes Square – the city’s most impressive square and the splendid terrace of Fisherman’s Bastion which offers a grand panorama of almost the entire city.
In the evening you can see this beautiful city when it lights up against the night sky. First of all you can experience an authentic piece of Hungarian culture at a folklore show and enjoy famous gypsy music and dancing with a glass of schnapps.
DAY 6: Enjoy a morning in Budapest or join our excursion which takes you through the sweeping plains of Hungary to Lajosmizse, where we visit a traditional stud farm. We take a tour of the grounds in a horse-drawn carriage, before watching human skill and horse power come together in a spectacular live Puszta horse show performed in an open air arena. We set sail in the afternoon and cruise towards Bratislava.
DAY 7: We reach Bratislava at the crack of dawn. This historic city is dominated by its castle and unique suspension bridge. Join our walking tour to take in the sights of this Slovakian capital and experience its rich culture, before we set sail in the afternoon and cruise towards Dürnstein.
DAY 8: The charming town of Dürnstein is surrounded by beautiful scenery and filled with traditional architecture and places of historic interest, crowned by the ruins of the castle that once imprisoned Richard the Lionheart. Roam along the beautifully cobbled streets to admire the 16th century houses and pretty courtyards before setting sail for the final time and cruise towards Passau.
DAY 9: We disembark at Passau this morning and travel by coach to our overnight hotel.
DAY 10: We make our way homeward, with a Channel crossing between Calais and Dover. Aiming to arrive back in Kent early evening.
